to protect the U.S. X Corps north and northeast flanks. Elements of the 22d ROK Regiment made contact with the 17th RCT of the 7th U.S. Infantry Divi- sion at Simpo. The 26th ROK Regiment was enroute to Hyesanjin from Sillyong. The Capitol ROK Division at Chongjin reported buildings, roads, and beaches mined. The 18th ROK Regiment and the 1st ROK Cavalry were engaged with the enemy 12 miles up the coast. At 0600/30(KT) the 3d U.S. Infantry Division was ordered to attack with a strong task force without de- lay along a general line 20 miles long between Inhung and Yonghung, envelop enemy forces in the Sansong area, and assist elements of the U.S. Eighth Army; the remainder of the Division is to concentrate in the Chigyong and Yonpo areas and protect the U.S. X Corps' west flank and the Hamhung- Sudong MSR. The 1st ROK Marine Regiment and one U.S. infantry battalion is to protect the Wonsan airfield. Elements of the 15th U.S. RCT moved to Yonghung. In the Tongyang area, 28 miles west of Wonsan, guerrillas attacked a friendly convoy; and a liaison pilot reported being fired upon by enemy machine guns at the Tongyang airstrip. ST PAUL continued call fire missions off the northeast coast in support of the Capitol ROK Division, while ROCHESTER stood by for support at Wonsan. (COMNAVFE) (SECRET) AIR h. On 29 November, U.N. aircraft under FEAF control flew 563 effec- tive sorties, including 4 reconnaissance, 57 fighter control, 144 transport, and 368 combat of which 124 were by Marine aircraft, 24 by RAAF air- craft, and 8 by SAAF aircraft. Of the close support sorties, 71 were flown in the U.S. IX Corps sector, 60 were flown in the ROK sector, and 8 were flown in the U.S. I Corps sector. Twenty-eight armed reconnaissance sorties attacked targets of opportunity. Four aircraft flew counter air patrol over Pyongyang and later attacked troop positions at Kunu, inflicting an undeter- mined number of enemy troop casualties. One aircraft conducted a light bombing mission in the Namsi area. Fourteen night intruder sorties were flown attacking military targets and inflicting damage on 23 vehicles; addi- tional claims being precluded by darkness. Two aircraft flew search mis- sions for a downed helicopter. One aircraft performed a radio relay of weather for B-29 aircraft. Four RAAF aircraft flew escort for a C-47 engaged in psychological warfare activity. (FEAF) (SECRET)
