JOINT DAILY SITREP NO. 147

From 0700/01 (EST) to 0700/04 (EST)
From 2100/01 (Korea) to 2100/04 (Korea)
1. Situation in Brief:
a. On 2 December, the situation remained critical in the Changjin
Reservoir area as an estimated 9 CCF Divisions engaged the 1st U.S.
Marine Division and 2 battalions of the 7th U.S. Infantry Division, A new
and more serious threat appeared at noon, as friendly air flashed a warning
that roads in the Yangdok area 25 miles west of Wonsan were jammed with
hostile troops moving eastward, although subsequent reconnaissance failed
to locate the enemy. The 5th and 7th U.S. Marine Regiments began with-
drawing from Yudam toward Changjin, and were under heavy attacks by four
enemy regiments. The 2 battalions of the 7th U.S. Infantry Division, isolated
on the east side of the Reservoir, made approximately 2500 yards while a
attempting to withdraw toward Changjin. These withdrawing units, hampered
by numerous wounded, were last reported overrun. Approximately 500 troops
escaped by moving across the ice covered reservoir to Changjin. Hostile
units continued to block the MSR in force south of Changjin, while reports
indicated that strong enemy elements were approaching the MSR on a 10
to 12 mile front south of Koto. In the U.S. Eighth Army sector, the 8th U.S.
Cavalry Regiment was forced to withdraw from Songchon under hostile
attack, but was counterattacking to restore positions. Light probing attacks
were received in other portions of the 1st U.S. Cavalry Division sector,
while the Eighth Army front-line units continued to reorganize and improve
defensive positions. The 2d U.S. Infantry Division is no longer considered
combat effective, because of heavy personnel and equipment losses during
the past 3 days. The strength of the 3 regiments was reported as: 9th Regi-
ment, 1,200; 23d Regiment, 1,700; 38th Regiment, 1,600. The 15th, 38th and
503d Field Artillery Battalions lost all equipment and guns, while the 37th
Field Artillery and the 82d Anti-aircraft Artillery Battalions lost 50 and 60
percent of their guns and equipment respectively. The U.S. Eighth Army was
withdrawing to a new defensive line of Kami-Yulil-Pisokko-Desong Tongyok-
