1. Weather:
Weather continued clear in all Korea on 17/18 January. Battle area
temperatures ranged from 25 degrees to a minimum of 5 degrees. Fore-
cast for 181800-191800 (KT): Clear in most areas until 0600 (KT); increas-
ing multi-layered clouds on the west coast by 1800 (KT); fog and haze on
the west coast until 1100 (KT); and battle area temperatures from about 20
degrees to a minimum of minus degrees. (FEAF) (SECRET)
2. Enemy Situation:
Squad- and platoon-strength probing attacks were made upon UN posi-
tions across the front, without penetration at any point. Mortar and artil-
lery fire continued moderately heavy in the western sector. Two tanks
were observed 1 1/2 miles south of Panmunjom, and 2 others were fired
on by UN artillery 12 miles west-northwest of Chorwon. The adjusted
total of vehicle sightings for 16-17 January is 2, 122, of which 1, 505 were
southbound (FECOM) (SECRET)
3. United Nations Situation:
ARMY:
a. General: UN forces repulsed light probing attacks and con-
tinued to patrol against enemy groups of up to company size across the
front. (FECOM) (SECRET)
b. I US Corps: A patrol from the 1st ROK Division engaged an
enemy squad three miles northeast of Panmunjom, Other Division elements
observed two enemy tanks one and one-half miles south of Panmunjom. One
hundred ninety-six rounds of enemy mortar and artillery fire fell in the 1st
British Commonwealth Division sector, Elements of the 3d US Division re-
pulsed an attack by two enemy squads on a Division OP eight miles northwest
of Yonchon, Other Division units patrolled against squad- and platoon-size
