1. Situation in Brief:
By
Enemy activity in the U.S. X Corps sector remained concentrated
on the Changiin-Hamhung and Huksu-Majondong axis, as the 1st U.S. Marine
Division units in Changjin were reorganizing prior to fighting a withdrawal
south. Friendly elements in Koto were being engaged by an enemy regi-
ment. The 1st Cavalry and 18th Regiments of the withdrawing Capitol ROK
Division arrived at Kilchu and the 1st Regiment arrived at Songjin. The
26th ROK Regiment is enroute from Hyesanjin to Pungsan. The 17th U.S.
RCT is enroute by rail from Pukchang to Hungnam, with some elements
having arrived. Bridges across the Taedong River in Pyongyang were
blown at 0720/05 (KT) as the rear elements of the U.S. Eighth Army withdrew
southward. The only enemy contact in the Eighth Army area was a firefight
at Sunchon, where a ROK company was believed surrounded. Carrier planes
from Task Force 77 and Carrier Task Group 96.8 conducted strikes against
military installations, enemy troops, and supply areas with reported excel-
lent results. Naval air flew 299 sorties on 4 December, and U.N. aircraft
under FEAF control flew 640 sorties, including 31 fighter control, 13 re-
connaissance, 292 transport, and 304 combat. (FECOM)(SECRET)
2. Weather:
Clear to scattered low clouds over Korea. Visibility good, except
in haze at night. Forecast: Generally clear to scattered with excellent

3. United Nations Situation:
GROUND
a. U.S. Eighth Army: The Command Post of the 2d U.S. Infantry
Division opened at Kumchon, as elements of the Division closed in assembly
areas in the vicinity of Munsan and Kumchon. Units of the 187th U.S. Air-
borne RCT continued to withdraw to a new sector, with elements enroute
to the vicinity of Singye and Sibyon. Other elements of the RCT were engaged
with the enemy near Sibyon. The 21st Thailand Regiment was enroute to
Namchonjom. The 10th Philippine BCT was enroute to Kumchon. Elements
of the Northumberland Fusiliers Battalion was enroute from Kaesong to Kum-
chon. The Netherlands Battalion was enroute from Taegu to Suwon, and the
French Infantry Battalion continued processing at Taegu. (FECOM)(SECRET)
