SECRET Washington, D.C. 15 December 1950 JOINT DAILY SITREP NO. 156 (maps attached) 1 From 0700/14 (EST) to 0700/15 (EST) From 2100/14 (Korea) to 2100/15 (Korea) 1. Situation in Brief: The U.S. Eighth Army's withdrawal to the new defense line was completed with almost no hostile interference. The 1st ROK and the 25th U.S. Infantry Divisions under the U.S. I Corps established defense positions generally along the south bank of the Imjin River from Ogum to Chogam. The 6th ROK and 24th U.S. Infantry Divisions under the U.S. IX Corps OC- cupied defense positions east from Chogam to Kisan. Stubborn resistance north of Chunchon denied the advance of the 27th and 36th Regiments of the 5th ROK Division. However, the 31st Regiment, encountering only light opposition, advanced up to 5,000 yards in the Chujon area. An increase in enemy pressure in the U.S. X Corps was indicated as hostile forces launched probing attacks for the 3d consecutive day, when an attack by an estimated enemy company slightly east of Oro caused the withdrawal of a 65th U.S. RCT outpost to the ML.R at 2400/14 (KT). Another attack against elements of the 7th U.S. Infantry Regiment, 7 miles west of Hamhung at 0720/15 (KT), was made by an estimated 150 CCF troops against a friendly roadblock Following the completion of embarkation of the 1st U.S. Marine Division, less detached units, the outloading of elements of the ROK I Corps and the 3d and 7th U.S. Infantry Divisions began at Hungnam. Carrier aircraft con- tinued close air support and interdiction missions. Naval air flew 287 sorties, including 136 missions by Fast Carrier aircraft, 36 missions by CVE aircraft, 95 missions by Marine landbased aircraft, and 20 missions by Patrol Squadrons on 14 December; and U.N. aircraft under FEAF control flew 584 sorties, of which 29 were flown by Marine aircraft, 12 by SAAF aircraft, and 12 by RAAF aircraft. FECOM)(SECRET) 2. Weather: Weather was generally clear, except along the east coast until 0900 (KT) when overcast high clouds and scattered middle clouds formed until the end of the period. Visibilities were generally excellent, except in snow along the east coast. Forecast: A cold front type occlusion is expected to pass through Korea during the period. Multilayer cloud decks are expected to be associated with the front. Visibility will be poor with frontal passage, with rapid clearing expected after passage.
