1. Weather:
Winter weather is beginning in Korea. On the first day of the period,
the weather was operational with fog in the central battle area, but on the
second day, weather was nonoperational, with all of Korea north of the
37th Parallel cloud-covered on that day, with snow and rain showers fall.-
ing over most of the area. On 8 November, the weather cleared and was
operational, but on 9 November there was again heavy fog in the central
area, with flying conditions ranging from nonoperational to operational,
Battle area temperatures ranged from a low of 26 degrees to a high of 60
degrees F. (FEAF) (SECRET)
2. Enemy Situation:
Enemy activity diminished during the period, although heavy fighting
occurred in the west and west-central sectors during the first two days of
the period and in the east sector during the last night of the period. West
of CHORWON, action flared on the early morning of 7 November with a
series of enemy attacks of up to company strength against OP positions on
PORK CHOP HILL (ten miles west of CHORWON). One attack seized an
OP position, but a short time later, the enemy withdrew and UN elements
reoccupied the position without contact; the other attacks were repulsed.
Northeast of CHORWON, on 6 November, an enemy company, reinforced
to battalion strength, forced UN elements to withdraw from an OP position
on BILL 391, after heavy fighting, but UN elements later reoccupied the
position without contact. In the KUMHWA area, enemy elements of up to
company strength continued sporadic probes against UN OP and MLR posi-
tions in the vicinity of HILL 598 and SNIPER RIDGE throughout the period,
with all attacks repulsed after generally brief engagements. In the central
sector, southeast of KUMSONG, are attack by two enemy companies on
FINGER RIDGE was repulsed by UN elements on 8 November. During the
other three days of the period, there was no enemy contact from KUMSONG
to the PUKHAN RIVER, North and northeast of YANGGU, a series of prob-
ing attacks of platoon strength and less occurred against positions of the
