1. Situation in Brief:
Following a 24 hour period of relative quiet in the right portion
of the ROK III Corps sector northeast of Chunchon, the enemy launched 3
attacks, each of battalion strength, against the 21st ROK Regiment. One of
these efforts effected a penetration of approximately 1 mile before being
contained. The ROK troops, closely supported by air strikes, launched a
counterattack which was making favorable progress. The other ROK units
under attack were holding their positions. Fighting was still in progress
during the morning of 27 December. Elements of the 29th ROK Regiment
were engaged with an estimated battalion, approximately 5 miles east of
Hyon; but results of the action were unreported. Other hostile contacts con-
sisted of 2 patrol skirmishes along the Imjin River near the Army left
flank. The U.S. X Corps, now under U.S. Eighth Army control, has assem-
bled 95 percent of its Corps troops at Kyongju. Eighteen percent of the per-
sonnel and 30 percent of the equipment of the 3d U.S. Infantry Division
closed in the vicinity of Madong. On 26 December, U.N. aircraft under
FEAF control flew 668 sorties. (FECOM) (SECRET)
2. Weather:
Clear throughout Korea except for a brief period of broken to
overcast low clouds, and snow showers during a cold front passage. Fore-
cast: Clear throughout Korea until 1200/28 (KT) then scattered to broken
low and middle clouds. Visibility good, except in early morning haze and
smoke. (FEAF)(SECRET)
