From 0700/28 (EST) to 0700/29 (EST) By From 2100/28 (Korea) to 2100/29 (Korea) 1 By 1. Situation in Brief: The attack by 2-enemy regiments against the right flank elements of the ROK III Corps, northeast of Chunchon, was contained at 0945/28 (KT); and by that afternoon, the 3d ROK Regiment, counterattacking to assist the hard-pressed 21st ROK Regiment, had restored a portion of the previously lost positions. By late afternoon on 28 December, 2 enemy battalions were observed withdrawing north and northwest from this immediate front. The situation was somewhat obscure in the 9th ROK Division sector, generally south of Hyon. Delayed reports from this area indicated that on 27 Decem- ber, elements of 2 regiments were forced to withdraw up to 6 miles under heavy pressure by 2 hostile forces, each estimated at regimental strength. The situation was further obscured as ground sources reported 2 regimental size enemy forces near Hungjong and south of Kwangwon, and further attacks on 28 December causing an additional withdrawal. At last report the situa- tion had stabilized. Otherwise along the U.N. front, activity remained con- fined to patrol level. Carrier aircraft on both the east and west coasts continued their attacks on military targets and troop concentrations in close support of the front-line troops, while surface vessels maintained blockade patrols and stood by for gunfire support missions. U.N. aircraft under FEAF control flew 755 sorties. (FECOM) (SECRET) 2. Weather: Broken to overcast low clouds covered most of Korea north of the 37th parallel after 0600/28 (KT).
