From 2100/09 (Korea) to 2100/10 (Korea) 1. Situation in Brief: Some hostile pressure continues in the Wonju area: 2 enemy battalions attacked positions of the 8th ROK Division, 8 miles southwest of Wonju, and penetrated to a depth of 1 mile before being contained by ROK reserves. At last report, this hostile force was withdrawing north. Elements of the French Battalion were engaged by an enemy company 3 miles south of Wonju. No significant front line engagments were reported in other sectors, although the 2d U.S. Infantry Division, holding defense positions south of Wonju, reported several contacts. The 31st and 32d ROK Regiments of the 2d ROK Division, previously isolated in the Kapyong area, were reported assembling south of Chungju and preparing for further movement to the Hamchang area. Naval operations were hampered by bad weather with only 19 sorties being flown by carrier aircraft. U.N. aircraft under FEAF control flew 234 sorties. (FECOM) (SECRET) 2. Weather: High overcast clouds with lower broken clouds becoming overcast. Visibility was reduced by frequent rain and snow showers. Forecast: Weather on 11 January is expected to be clear with scattered clouds in the northern areas, with low clouds along the east coast. Visibility will be good, except in showers along the east coast. (FEAF) (SECRET) 3. United Nations Situation: GROUND a. U.S. Eighth Army: The 187th U.S. Airborne RCT closed at Andong. The 1st Marine Regiment of the 1st U.S. Marine Division was enroute to Yongchon, while the remainder of the Division prepared to move to the Pohang-Kyongju area. The mission of the Division is to prevent enemy penetration in force south of Andong, and to protect the Pohang- Kyongju-Yongchon-Uihung-Uisong main supply route. (FECOM) (SECRET) b. U.S. I Corps: The 29th United Kingdom Infantry Brigade Group continued in positions along the Defense Line and patrolling the road in the rear of the 27th U.S. RCT to secure routes of withdrawal to the main battle positions.
