(maps attached)
From 0700/19 (EST) to 0700/22 (EST)
From 2100/19 (Korea) to 2100/22 (Korea)
1. Situation in Brief:
a. On 20 January, U.S. I and IX Corps units patrolled to the north,
encountering 8 small hostile groups, the largest estimated as a company, in
the center of the United Nations' front, the 2d U.S. Infantry Division and
attached units reported 4 light patrol skirmishes with enemy groups of unde-
termined strength in the Wonju area. The 8th ROK Division, late on 19 Janu-
ary, was engaged with an enemy battalion, 7 miles southeast of Yangyang.
Elements of the 7th U. S. Infantry Division reported 2 minor patrol contacts
along the Chechon-Yongwo highway, while other elements of the Division en-
gaged in 5 skirmishes in rear areas east and northeast of Tanyang; attacked
a dug-in enemy company, and repulsed several small attacks in the Tanyang
area. Approximately 10 miles north of Punggi, 2 regiments of the 5th ROK
Division engaged elements of the 2d North Korean Division. In the ROK III
Corps sector, an enemy force equivalent to 2 regiments was reported in the
Yongwol area. However, the 8th Regiment of the 7th ROK Division was in
contact with only 1 battalion of that force. The 18th and 23d Regiments of the
3d ROK Division, attacking to clear the area southeast of Yongwol, encountered
only small enemy groups. On 19 January, Task Force 77 aircraft flew 247 sorties,
and aircraft from the BATAAN flew 42 sorties; and U. N. aircraft under FEAF
control flew 542 sorties. (FECOM) (SECRET)
b. On 21 January, no significant action was reported along the U.S.
I and IX Corps fronts. On the U.S. X Corps front, an attack by an enemy
regiment caused a company of the 2d U.S. Infantry Division to withdraw from
Wonju to more favorable positions. Five patrol clashes were reported at
other points on the Corps front. Hostile activity in the Corps' rear areas con-
tinued as the 2, 000 man force, previously engaged by elements of the 5th ROK
Division, 10 miles north of Punggi, broke contact and withdrew to the North-
west. Elements of the 8th ROK Division continued to engage an enemy battalion,
7 miles southwest of Tanyang. An enemy force, estimated at 2, 000, has been
reported moving south in the area 10 miles northeast of Andong, with the
alleged mission of attacking Andong and cutting the main supply route. Task
