Situation in Brief: The U.S. I and IX Corps units which attacked northward early on 22 January began withdrawing to the former main line of resistance at mid-afternoon. The only significant engagement occurred 4 miles east of Kumnyangjang where elements of the 1st U.S. Cavalry Division en- countered 200 enemy. Meeting only light opposition, a battalion of the 2d U.S. Infantry Division again occupied Wonju and the high ground east thereof on the afternoon of 22 January, but withdrew to positions 3 miles south of the town for the night. The only other activity along the U.S. X Corps front was an attack by a hostile company against elements of the 7th U.S. Infantry Division 4 miles west of Yongwol which was repulsed after a 3-hour fight. In the rear area of this sector, elements of the 8th ROK Division continued to engage 2 enemy battalions, 6 miles southwest of Tanyang during 22 January. The enemy disengaged at dusk and moved to the southeast, evading friendly troops. No activity was reported along the ROK Army front. In the rear areas, elements of the 1st U.S. Marine Division attacked 2, 000 North Korean troops 15 miles southeast of Andong, killing an estimated 200. Task Force 77 sorties were not reported, but planes from BATAAN flew 36 sorties, and U.N. aircraft under FEAF con- trol flew 716 sorties, (FECOM)(SECRET) 2. Weather: Broken to overcast low clouds in west central Korea. Clear to scattered low clouds in the remainder of Korea. Visibility unrestricted except for short period in early morning haze and fog. Forecast for period from 1800/23 to 1800/24 (KT): Broken low clouds south of 38 N along western lowlands. Clear to scattered low clouds in the remainder of Korea until 2100/23 (KT). Broken low and middle clouds throughout Korea for the remainder of the period. Visibility unrestricted, except in snow showers and early morning haze.
