Situation in Brief: Activity along the entire United Nations front was relatively light, with only 8 encounters with hostile units reported. In the western sector, 6th ROK Division patrols engaged in 2 brief fire fights with com- pany sized enemy units 4 miles east of Kumnyangjang, while a 24th U.S. Infantry Division patrol reported an engagement with an enemy company 2 miles northeast of Yoju. Enemy activity in the Wonju area decreased considerably on 23 January, as a battalion of the 2d U.S. Infantry Division again occupied the town, including the high ground to the east; and patrolled 4 miles northward against light resistance. This friendly battalion with- drew South of Wonju for the night, and began a reconnaissance in force toward the town early on 24 January. Elements of the 7th U.S Infantry Division engaged in a 1 hour fire fight with an undetermined number of enemy, 3 miles northwest of Yongwol. The enemy force previously en- gaged by elements of the 8th ROK Division, 6 miles southwest of Tanyang has reportedly moved 5 miles to the southeast. An air report indicated that the ROK forces were heavily engaged north of Yongwol on 23 January, but ground confirmation of this action has not been received. Elements of the 7th ROK Division engaged a company size enemy group, 7 miles northeast of Yongwol. The 3d Regiment of the 7th ROK Division launched an attack at 0800/24 (KT) to secure the high ground north of Yongwol. The 2,000 man enemy force, previously engaged with elements of the 1st U.S. Marine Division, 15 miles southeast of Andong, has reportedly moved north to Chonji on the Andong-Yongdok highway. A Marine patrol in an area 18 miles southeast of Andong received heavy machine gun fire. ROK police stated 2 enemy groups of 2, 000 each were located in this area; one such enemy group was moving west toward Uisong. Task Force 77 planes flew 139 sorties and aircraft from the BATAAN flew 41 sorties. U.N. aircraft under FEAF control flew 618 sorties. (FECOM) (SECRET) 2. Weather: Broken to overcast middle and low clouds over Korea south of 38N, clear in north Korea. Visibility was generally good. Forecast: 25 January to be clear in north Korea, with broken middle and low clouds over south Korea, gradually improving to scattered by the end of the period.
