1. Weather:
Middle clouds became overcast over all Korea. Visibility
1 to 3 miles in the west-central sector. Maximum battle area temperature,
32 degrees; minimum 22. Forecast: A cold front lying across Korea near
the 38th Parallel will cause broken, low, middle, and high clouds with
bases about 2, 000 feet. Snow showers over south Korea by noon. Visibility
lowering 1 to 3 miles in frontal zone - snow showers. (FEAF) (SECRET)
2. Enemy Situation:
Two light probing attacks were made on UN positions near Panmun-
jom in the west and three near Komisong on the east flank Mines damaged
three UN tanks during the period. The volume of enemy mortar and artillery
fire increased in the area between Kumsong and Komisong. The adjusted
total of vehicle sightings for 22-23 January is 2, 395, of which 1, 708 were
southbound, (FECOM) (SECRET)
3. United Nations Situation:
ARMY:
a. General: UN forces repulsed light probing attacks and
continued patrolling, which included a company-size raid from the 45th US
Division northwest of Yonchon. The 223d Regiment (of the 40th US Division)
was attached to the 24th US Division effective 231550 (KT) and moved to an
assembly area five miles north of Hwachon. (FECOM) (SECRET)
b. I US Corps: Hostile platoons engaged 1st ROK Division
outpost positions at two points on the Division front, four miles south and
eight miles northeast of Panmunjom; both attacks were repulsed. Division
patrols engaged a reinforced enemy platoon in three encounters northeast of
Panmunjom. The 1st British Commonwealth Division reported no contact.
