a. GROUND
(1) U. S. I Corps: Heavy fighting occarred in 3 localities in the
Western sector during 26 January, as the U.S. 1 and IX Corps continued
to conduct strong reconnaissance in force. There was no hostile reaction
to the occupation of Suwon until the night of 26/27 January, when several
platoon-size enemy groups entered the town and engaged elements of the
35th U.S. RCT for approximately 2 hours. The 2d Battalion of the 35th
U.S. RCT moved northwest out of Suwon on the morning of 27 January. By
early afternoon on 26 January, the 3d Turkish Battalion advanced north to
the high ground 6 miles northeast of Osan, where heavy resistance was en-
countered from an estimated enemy regiment employing small arms and
mortar fire. After an air strike, the Turkish Battalion drove the enemy
north from the high ground at 1730/27 (KT), killing 474 enemy and captur-
ing 62 others. The 1st and 2d Turkish Battalions seized Kumnyangjang
from the enemy after heavy house to house street fighting, during the after-
noon of 26 January. This enemy force withdrew after sustaining 350 killed
in action by air and ground attacks. The 2d Turkish Battalion was unable
to dislodge the enemy from the high ground just north of Kumnyangjang
early on 27 January; however, an air strike later permitted the battalion,
with the assistance of a ROK battalion, to seize the objective by 1000/27 (KT).
The 3d U. S. Infantry Division's 15th and 65th U.S. RCTs advanced north
at 0900/27(KT) to relieve the Turkish Brigade (FECOM) (SECRET)
