Situation in Brief: E.O. 12065, Sec. 3-402 DOD Directive 5100.30, June 18, 1979 GROUND By NLT- HV NARS, Date 2/14/81 Elements of the 1st U.S. Marine Division crossed the Han River in strength west of Seoul in the early morning of 20 September. The ROK Marines on the left flank of the Inchon sector encountered the 107th North Korean Security Regiment. Flying box cars are delivering tons of supplies and equipment to Kimpo Airfield. The flanks of the 25th U.S. Infantry Division advanced westward against moderate enemy resistance, while the center was slowed by an enemy strong point. The 24th U.S. Infantry Division continued to strengthen its bridgehead west of the Naktong. The 23d U.S. RCT of the 2d U.S. Infantry Division threw an additional bridge- head across the river, while the 38th U.S. RCT consolidated its crossing. The 1st U.S. Cavalry Division reported light gains against strong resis- tance. ROK forces seized high ground overlooking Kigye and captured Pohang. (FECOM)(SECRET) NAVY Carrier-based planes provided close support for the forward movement of forces in the Inchon area, and ranged west-central Korea, striking at enemy transportation facilities, troop concentrations, and inter- dicting the movement of reinforcements to the Seoul area, British and Commonwealth ships covered the flanks of the Inchon operation, and main- tained a rigid blockade of the northwest and southeast coasts. The ROK troops were evacuated from the disabled LST in spite of poor weather. The ENDICOTT furnished close support to the 25th U.S. Infantry Division. Navy planes flew 191 sorties on 19 September. (COMNAVFE)(SECRET) AIR On 19 September, FEAF aircraft flew 671 sorties, including 471 combat. On 20 September, 60 B-29's attacked marshaling yards at Sugo and Sariwon, military barracks in the Pyongyang area, military training area at Wonsan, and rail lines between Sinanju and Sonchon and between Sinanju and Pyongyang. The Combat Cargo Command inaugurated the air- lift to the Seoul-Inchon area, when the first C-54 landed at Kimpo Airfield on 19 September. (FEAF)(SECRET) SECRET
