2. United Nations Situation:
GROUND
a. U.S. I Corps: Hostile units offered only minor resistance
in the Western sector during 29 January as U.S. I and IX Corps units con-
tinued to attack northward. Adverse weather conditions hampered advan-
ces of friendly units. Late on the afternoon of 29 January, elements of
the 35th U.S. RCT encountered a strong point 6 miles northwest of Suwon
manned by 200 well dug-in enemy troops, employing artillery, mortar
and heavy small arms fire; friendly elements withdrew after a one-hour
attack failed to dislodge the enemy. In the 3d U.S. Infantry Division zone,
elements of the 65th U.S. Infantry RCT beat off an enemy attack in com-
pany strength 5 miles northeast of Suwon on 29 January. On the morning
of 30 January, elements of the 25th and 3d U.S. Infantry Divisions resumed
their attack, but made slow progress owing to continued adverse weather
conditions; some enemy mortar and small arms fire was received. (FE-
COM) (SECRET)
b. U.S. IX Corps: In the 1st U.S. Cavalry Division sector,
the 5th U.S Cavalry RCT engaged enemy groups up to company strength
while advancing from 1 to 2 miles to positions about 5 miles north and
northeast of Kumnyangjang. The 7th U.S. Cavalry RCT and the Greek
Battalion encountered light opposition from an estimated enemy regiment
while advancing approximately 3 miles to positions along a line from 5 miles
northwest of Ichon to about 3 miles northeast of Ichon. At 0230/30 (KT),
an enemy battalion counterattacked the Greek Battalion 5 miles northwest
of Ichon, while an enemy company attacked nearby elements of the 7th U.S.
Cavalry RCT; the attacks were contained without loss of position after a
three-hour fire fight. On the morning of 30 January, the 5th and 7th U.S
Cavalry RCT's resumed the attack. In the 24th U.S. Infantry Division
sector, the 19th U.S. RCT closed in its assembly area 5 miles northeast
