United Nations Situation: GROUND a. U.S. I Corps: Enemy resistance to the U.S. Eighth Army offensive in the Western sector became increasingly stronger during 30 January. The stubborn character of enemy resistance is evidenced by the fact that only 10 PW's were captured as compared to an estimated 1,573 enemy KIA and over 500 WIA. Owing to such tenacious resistance, friendly advances were limited to minor gains throughout the day. On the left flank, the Turkish Brigade drove a reinforced enemy company north- ward and advanced to a position 8 to 11 miles northwest of Suwon. The 1st and 2d Battalions, 35th U.S. Infantry RCT, each encountered stiff resis- tance from an enemy battalion 7 miles northwest of Suwon. The 15th ROK Regiment passed through the 3d Battalion, 35th U.S. RCT, and engaged an enemy company 6 miles northwest of Suwon; at darkness, this regiment reported occupying positions north of Suwon along a line from 6 miles northwest of the city to 3 miles north of Suwon. A night counterattack was repulsed. The Turkish Brigade and the 35th U.S. RCT resumed the attack on the morning of 31 January, but results have not yet been reported. In the 3d U. S. Infantry Division area., the 65th U.S. Infantry RCT drove a well-entrenched enemy force northward from high ground 3 miles northeast of Suwon after a. heavy hand to hand fight; air strikes and artillery bom- bardment earlier had failed to dislodge this force. The 15th U.S. RCT forced an enemy unit of undetermined size from high ground northwest of Kumyangjang after heavy fighting and advanced to positions 4 to 8 miles northwest of Kumyangjang before digging in for the night. Numerous in- stances of bypassed enemy troops springing from camouflaged holes to attack friendly troops were reported. Early on 31 January, the 15th and 65th U.S. RCT's resumed the attack, with the 65th RCT advancing 1,000 yards by 1100 hours with no report of enemy opposition. (FECOM) (SECRET)
