1. Weather:
Weather on 16 February consisted of broken to overcast middle
and high clouds over all Korea, becoming overcast middle clouds, and
broken low clouds over northern Korea; low clouds became broken to
scattered over southern Korea. Visibility generally 6-8 miles. Forecast
for 17 February: Broken middle clouds and broken variable to scattered
low clouds over all Korea with overcast low clouds along the east coast
south of Wonsan; becoming scattered middle and low clouds throughout
the entire area. Visibility 3-5 miles in early morning haze, improving
to 6-8 miles. (FEAF) (SECRET)
2. United Nations Situation:
GROUND
a. U.S. I Corps: 1st ROK Division: The 12th ROK Regiment
occupied positions from north and west of Kimpo airfield to the Han River
5 miles northwest of Seoul. The 15th ROK Regiment is south of Seoul
along the Han River. The Turkish Brigade has been placed under opera-
tional control of U.S. I Corps and is assembling near Anyang. The 35th
U.S. Infantry RCT, remaining in position between Seoul and Yongdungpo,
has been detached from the 25th U.S. Infantry Division and placed under
U.S. I Corps control. 3d U.S. Infantry Division: The 15th U.S. Infantry
RCT drove a reinforced CCF company northeast from a point 3 miles
southeast of Seoul. A 7th U.S. Infantry RCT patrol encountered heavy
resistance 3 miles northeast of Kwangju. 25th U.S. Infantry Division:
The Division has relieved the 1st U.S. Cavalry Division and its new sector
is now on the right flank of the 3d Division. The 29th United Kingdom Bri-
gade has been placed under operational control of the 25th Division; and
the 24th U.S. Infantry RCT, operating in the Kyongan area where it re-
lieved the 8th U.S. Cavalry RCT, has reverted to Division control. The
27th U. S. Infantry RCT relieved the 7th U.S. Cavalry RCT in the area
from 2 miles east of Kyongan to 5 miles southeast of Kyongan; the regiment
encountered heavy resistance 4 miles east of Kyongan on the morning of 16
February. Two enemy battalions on the north bank of the Han River 8 miles
north of Kyongan were taken under artillery fire. (FECOM) (SECRET)
b. U.S. IX Corps: 1st U.S. Cavalry Division: The 7th U.S.
Cavalry RCT drove the enemy from a mountain 4 miles southeast of Kyon-
