Weather: Korean weather, during the period 17 to 19 February, consisted of scattered low and middle clouds over all Korea at the beginning of the period, becoming generally broken to overcast as a cold front moved in from the northwest during the middle of the period and changing to scat- tered low clouds again at the end of the period. Visibility more than 7 miles except in haze and snow showers. Forecast for 20 February: Bro- ken middle and broken to overcast high clouds. Visibility more than 6 miles, except 1-3 miles in early morning haze. Minimum battle area tem perature 23 degrees F. (FEAF) (SECRET) 2. United Nations Situation: GROUND a. U.S. I Corps: 1st ROK Division: No significant activity or enemy contact was reported during the period. The 15th ROK Regiment re- lieved the 35th U.S. Infantry RCT. 3d U.S. Infantry Division: Elements conducted sweeping operations north to the Han River, engaging enemy groups in the area about 5 miles northwest of Kwangju. An enemy attack during the night of 16-17 February 4 miles north of Kwangju was repulsed; air attacked an enemy battalion in this area on 17 February. On 18 Febru- ary, only light patrol contact was reported. The 15th U.S. Infantry RCT relieved elements of the 15th ROK Regiment from a point due south of Seoul along the Han River to a point 6 miles southeast of the city. The 7th U.S. Infantry RCT shifted to the west and occupied positions from 6 miles west of to 2 miles south of Kwangju. The 65th U.S. Infantry RCT adjusted po- sitions along a line from 4 miles northwest of to 4 miles north of Kwangju. 25th U.S. Infantry Division: On 16 February, elements attacking north of Kyongan made slight progress against heavy enemy resistance. The 29th United Kingdom Brigade occupied positions along a general line from 1 mile east of Kwangju to 4 miles north of Kyongan. The 24th U.S. Infantry RCT captured a hill 3 miles northeast of Kyongan, lost it twice and regained it, and advanced another mile to the north on 16 February. On 18 Febru- ary, the 24th J.S. RCT advanced to positions about 5 miles north of Kyongan without opposition. The 27th U.S. Infantry RCT advanced 6 miles east and 5 miles northeast of Kyongan on 18 February without opposition, after meet- ing stubborn resistance earlier in the period.
