The entire 6th ROK Division successfully crossed the Pukhan River against moderate small arms and some mortar fire The three Regiments now maintain positions abreast on a general line running from Piryong to a point approximately 7 miles to the southeast. 1st U.S. Cavalry Division units (Greek Battalion at- tached) attacked against stubborn to light resistance and occupied positions from approximately of miles west to 3 miles north of Hongchon. Enemy opposition ranged from small arms and rocket fire to three Banzai at- tacks. A total of five counterattacks were repulsed with resistance sub- siding to little or none by the close of the period. 1st U.S. Marine Divi- sion: The 1st U.S. Marine Division attacking against generally light opposition advanced up to 5 miles occupying positions 4 miles north-north- east to of miles east of Hongchon. By the close of the period, patrols had ranged north 2, 000 yards without enemy contact. The 1st ROK Marine Regiment is now attached to the 1st U.S. Marine Division. (FECOM) (SECRET) d. X U.S. Corps: Units of the 2d U.S. Infantry Division ad- vanced up to 6 miles against light opposition to positions 5 miles south of Tappung and 1 to 3 miles north and northwest of Pungam. Patrols in the area 3 miles south of Tappung dispersed an estimated enemy company after a 2-hour firefight. The 3d ROK Division maintained and adjusted positions in the area 2 miles east and 2 to 6 miles southeast of Pungam without opposition. Patrols ranging up to 7 miles north of present posi- tions made no enemy contact. On 16 March, elements of 27th ROK In- fantry Regiment, 5th ROK Division, successfully ambushed remnants of the 6th North Korean Division in the vicinity of Taewol. An estimated 425 enemy were killed and a large quantity of U.S. -type materiel cap- tured. The 7th U.S. Infantry Division generally adjusted and maintained previous positions in the Changdong area with elements moving to posi- tions 8 miles east of Pungam and other elements 9 miles northeast of Changdong.
