strength probing attacks east of Kumhwa, while other elements of the
Division, and of the 6th ROK Division, patrolled against platoon=strength

groups were encountered by 7th ROK Division patrols east of the Pukhan
River. Two platoon-strength hostile probing attacks were repulsed in
the same area. 2d US Infantry Division patrols engaged groups up to
company size north of Yanggu. North of Sohwa, 8th ROK Division
patrols encountered squad- to platoon-size groups and directed artillery
fire on 16 trucks moving across the front.. Light to moderate mortar
and artillery fire continued to be received in the Corps sector. (FECOM)

e. I ROK Corps: Capitol ROK Division units repulsed a small
probing attack west of Kansong, as patrols from the Capitol, 11th and
3d ROK Divisions engaged or observed platoon-size groups on the Corps

NAVY
f. Naval and Marine aircraft flew a total of 123 sorties,
including 27 by patrol squadrons and 69 by shore-based USMC.
Twenty-seven night-heckler missions were flown from PRINCETON and
BOXER on the east coast late 30 July, striking targets on the northeast
coast. No carrier operations were conducted on 31 July owing to

9. On the east coast, CARMICK and THOMPSON fired on
transportation facilities at Songjin and Chongjin. At Wonsan, HELENA,
HUBBARD, O'BRIEN, BROWN, and YARNALL fired on troop concen-
trations and other enemy targets. HELENA sustained a hit on the main
deck from an estimated 105-mm. shell. No personnel casualties
resulted from the hit, although 2 men were injured from previous near
misses. NAIFEH fired on troop positions near the bombline,

h. On the west coast, frigates continued to bombard the
northern bank of the Han Estuary and maintained patrol of the coastal
