Weather: There was thunderstorm activity, and a weather system of multi- layered clouds 150 miles long and 60 miles wide moved across Korea from NW to SE during the period. Forecast for 17 September: visibility generally over 10 miles but rain and scattered thunderstorms. (FEAF) (SECRET) 2. Enemy Situation: Strong resistance continued in the least-central sector, north of Yanggu and Sohwa, where groups up to regiment in size fought from bunker positions. Hand-to-hand fighting was reported north of Sohwa. Eneray activity was less in other sectors, although several probing attacks were made near Kumhwa. An enemy rocket launcher, eight miles north of Sohwa, fired a volley of three rockets on UN elements at noon on 16 September. An unidentified aircraft strafed UN positions with a "burp" gun near Chorwon on 15 September. During the period, air sighted a total of 782 vehicles, of which 410 were moving south. General: UN forces continued to attack toward high-ground objectives across the X US Corps front and made slight gains in heavy fighting northeast of Yanggu and north of Sohwa. Aggressive patrolling continued in other sectors, with tank-infantry teams probing north and northwest of Kumhwa.
