From 2100/03 (Korea) to 2100/04 (Korea) 1. Weather: The weather in Korea on 3 October was generally clear with visibility unrestricted except ground fog during the morning hours. 4 October, generally clear south of 38 degrees, increasing cloudiness over North Korea with multilayer clouds and thunderstorms beginning in the early morning. Forecast: Multilayered clouds and scattered showers north of 38 degrees. Over South Korea there will be a high overcast with broken clouds down to 9,000 feet. Visibility ten miles except in fog and rain showers. (FEAF) (SECRET) 2. Enemy Situation: Well entrenched enemy groups stubbornly resisted UN advances in heavy fighting, including hand-to-hand engagements, west of Chorwon. Numerous counterattacks, mostly in company strength, were made upon UN positions in this sector. Activity was less intense in other areas, although there was heavy resistance against UN attacks northeast of Yanggu, in the east-central sector, and groups up to battalion strength were engaged north of Hwachon. Two enemy groups were engaged behind UN lines near Pia, in the X US Corps sector. An unidentified aircraft dropped 7 500 lb. bombs on Capitol ROK Division positions west of Kansong, near the least coast. One hundred and fifty rounds of enemy mortar fire fell on 1st British Commonwealth Division positions north of Munsan. The adjusted total of vehicle sightings for 2-3 October is 4, ,583, of which 3, 057 were moving south. (FECOM) (SECRET) 3. United Nations Situation: ARMY: a. General: UN forces continued to attack against heavy re- sistance in the western sector and made gains of up to slightly more than a mile in the area west of Chorwon. Numerous enemy probing attacks and counterattacks were repulsed, with friendly withdrawals at two points west of Chorwon® Attacking ROK forces advanced about two miles across the Imjin River north of Munsan. UN forces in other sectors continued to probe enemy defensive positions. (FECOM) (SECRET)
