Weather: A cold front moved into North Korea with an associated overcast of multilayered clouds. Rainshowers lowered the ceiling to near 1500 feet. The front weakened rapidly southward, with little cloud cover over the bat- tle area. Forecast: Generally clear except for occasional restricted visi- bility in mountain areas. Maximum temperature 68 degrees, minimum 45. (FEAF) (SECRET) 2. Enemy Situation: Resistance continued very strong west of Chorwon where several bat- talion-strength counterattacks were made upon UN positions. Activity in- creased in the central sector from Kumhwa east to the Pukhan River, where numerous company- and platoon-strength probing attacks were made. Nearly 500 rounds of mortar and artillery fire fell on UN positions in the east-central sector. Near the east coast, ROK forces received six platoon- and company- strength probing attacks. Air sighted 46-48 enemy tanks at the following location: Nine miles west of Kumchon - 2; nine miles NE Sibyon - 28; 13 miles NE Sibyon - an undetermined number; 11 miles north Sibyon - 2; 11 miles SE Sibyon - 10-12; three miles NW Hoeyong - 4. The adjusted total of vehicle sightings for 3-4 October is 3, 713, of which 2, 347 were moving south. (FECOM) (SECRET) 3. United Nations Situation: ARMY: a. General: UN forces continued to attack in the western sector and made gains of nearly two miles west of Yonchon, with lesser advances west of Chorwon against heavy resistance. Several strong enemy counterat- tacks were repulsed in this area, but slight friendly withdrawals were made at two points. Numerous enemy probing attacks were repulsed in other sec- tors of the front, and UN forces continued to probe enemy defensive positions.
