Weather: Low broken clouds along the west coast becoming broken low, middle and high clouds during late afternoon. Scattered low and high broken clouds along the east coast gradually clearing during afternoon. Minimum battle area temperature 25 degrees, maximum 45 degrees. Forecast Broken low clouds over west coast areas. High overcast with scattered and middle clouds over remainder of Korea. No change in temperature, (FEAF) (SECRET) 20 Enemy Situation The enemy continued light probing attacks against UN positions and main- tained moderately heavy mortar and artillery fire in the central and east-central sectors. The adjusted total of vehicle sightings for 16-17 December is 1,859, of which 793 were southbound. (FECOM) (SECRET) 3. United Nations Situation: ARMY: ao General UN forces repulsed hostile probing attacks and con tinued to engage small groups in patrol clashes. The 2d US Infantry Division assumed responsibility for the 25th US Infantry Division sector on the left flank of the IX US Corps at 180745 (KT). (FECOM) (SECRET) b. I US Corps: Patrols from the 1st ROK Division engaged groups of platoon and undetermined size ten miles north of Munsan. Two hundred eight rounds of enemy mortar and artillery fire fell in the Division sector. A delayed report from the 1st British Commonwealth Division states that an undetermined number of enemy engaged a Division patrol west of Yonchon on 16 December Farther northeast, a patrol from the 3d US Infantry Division engaged a group of undetermined size northwest of Yonchon, and a small enemy group probed a Division outpost position eight miles west of Chorwon on 17 December. One hundred twenty-one rounds of mortar and artillery fire fell in the Division sector. 9th ROK Division patrols engaged squad and platoon=size groups northwest and north of Chorwon.
