Weather: On 28 December, visibility was unrestricted, with occasional scattered low clouds. Maximum battle area temperature 30 degrees, minimum 5. Forecast: Unrestricted visibility and occasional scattered low clouds. (FEAF) (SECRET) 2. Enemy Situation: Action flared in west sector, where an estimated battalion, supported by heavy mortar and artillery fire, attacked United Nations positions north- east of Panmunjom, and forced some friendly withdrawal. Elsewhere, minor probing attacks and continued light scattered opposition to United Nations patrols were reported. A total of more than 11 enemy tanks, SP guns, or tracked vehicles were observed in the western sector during the period. The adjusted total of vehicle sightings for the period 27-28 December is 4, 603g of which 3, 812 were southbound. (FECOM) (SECRET) 3. United Nations Situation: ARMY: a. General; United Nations forces in the west and least-central sectors maintained vigorous and successful defenses against enemy attacks, and launched several successful counter-attacks which restored former out- post positions. Friendly elements elsewhere across the front continued aggressive patrol operations in forward areas, and repulsed minor probing attacks in the east sector. Friendly artillery was active throughout the period against enemy troops, vehicles, and installations.
