Weather: Weather consisted of broken high and middle clouds becoming scattered clouds. Visibility was unrestricted. Battle area temperatures ranged from 10 to 28 degrees. (FEAF) (SECRET) 2. Enemy Situation: Enemy forces in the west sector offered stiff resistance and launch- ed several attacks of company and two-company strength against advancing UN elements five to six miles northeast of Panmunjom. Minor probing attacks occurred in the central, east-central, and east sectors. Elsewhere across the front, scattered groups of up to company size opposed UN pa- trols. Enemy mortar and artillery fire was moderate during the period. The adjusted total of vehicle sightings for the period 4-6 January is 4, 974, of which 3, 084 were southbound. (FECOM) (SECRET) 3. United Nations Situation: ARMY: do General: UN forces in the west sector renewed limited offensive operations to consolidate close-in objectives five to six miles northeast of Panmunjom. By the close of the period, most enemy resistance was overcome and several objectives were secured. Elsewhere across the front, minor enemy probing attacks were repulsed and UN forces continued aggressive patrol operations. (FECOM) (SECRET) b. I US Corps: Elements of the 1st ROK Division, five to six miles northeast of Panmunjom, initiated limited objective offensive operations on 5 January, advancing against battalion-size resistance and repulsing a counterattack by an estimated two companies.
