On 2 February, there were broken low clouds over the entire
west portion of Korea, and clear elsewhere. Visibility lowered to less
than 1 mile in early morning fog, improving to over 10 miles by 1000/
02 (KT). The entire Korea area was clear to scattered after 1400/02
(KT). Forecast for 3 February: Clear to scattered low clouds, with
good visibility, except for light early morning haze. (FEAF)(SECRET)
2. United Nations Situation:
GROUND
a. U.S. I Corps: A powerful enemy counterattack against ele-
ments of U. S. X Corps was repulsed after heavy fighting. Elements of
the U.S I and IX Corps gained up to 2 miles against light resistance.
Over 1,000 enemy casualties were inflicted in the 2d U.S. Division Zone,
and total enemy casualties for 1 February were estimated to be 1, 125 KIA,
579 WIA, and 32 PW's captured. The Turkish Brigade met little oppo-
sition on 1 February, making slight gains northwest of Suwon, while the
35th U.S Infantry RCT advanced unopposed northeast astride the Suwon-
Seoul highway to a point approximately 9 miles south of the Han River.
The 15th ROK Regiment remained in position. Resistance decreased in
the 3d U.S. Infantry Division area on 1 February as the 2d Battalion, 7th
U. S. Infantry RCT, joined the attack and advanced to 7 miles northeast
of Suwon. The 2d Battalion, 65th U.S. Infantry RCT, drove the enemy
from a hill 6 miles northeast of Suwon in a limited objective attack, with
11 enemy soldiers surrendering. On the right flank, the 1st Battalion,
15th U.S. Infantry RCT made slight gains against moderate resistance.
The 1st ROK Division is now relieving elements of the 7th and 24th U.S.
RCT's of security missions in rear areas. (FECOM)(SECRET)
b. U.S. IX Corps: Enemy resistance was almost nil in the 1st
U.S. Cavalry Division area north of Kumyangjang; forward elements met
only two small enemy groups in minor gains on 1 February. The 24th
U.S. Infantry Division remained in position north of Ichon, patrolling ex-
tensively to the north without contacting the enemy. The 6th ROK Division
is assembling 10 miles south of Ichon as corps reserve. (FECOM) (SECRET)
