JOINT SITREP NO. 506
(Maps attached)
From 0700/05 (EDT) to 0700/09 (EDT)
From 2100/05 (Korea) to 2100/09 (Korea)
1. Weather:
Most of Korea was generally clear, with visibility unrestricted
except for the east coast where fog and drizzle lowered visibility to
1 to 3 miles. Increasing cloudiness with occasional rain showers are
forecast. (FEAF) (SECRET)
2. Enemy Situation:
Enemy activity continued generally light, highlighted by repeated
platoon- to company-size attacks against elements of the 45th US Division
in newly-occupied positions 10 miles west of Chorwon on 6 and 7. June.
Sporadic, minor attacks occurred against the 7th US, 6th ROK, and 8th
ROK Divisions, with engagements up to 50 minutes. Opposition to United
Nations patrols, highlighted by stubborn resistance from an estimated
battalion well-entrenched opposite the 8th ROK Division sector on 5 June,
was generally light and scattered across the front. Enemy mortar and
artillery fire was light to moderate in all sectors, totaling 12, 306 rounds
for the period, of which 5, 558 rounds fell in the X US Corps sector and
4, 529 rounds fell in the I US Corps sector. The adjusted total of vehicle
sightings for the period 5-8 June is 4, 738, of which 2, 763 were southbound
Ground observers of the 1st Marine Division and 1st British Commonwealth
Division reported continuing heavy vehicle activity on 5 and 6 June opposite
their respective sectors. On 6 June at 2227 hours (KT) ground observers
of the 25th US Division reported a balloon-shaped object in the air about
eight miles northwest of Kajon. The object was described as white, later
changing to red as if from intense burning, and it disappeared after 20
minutes. Immediately after this observation, a second object appeared
6,000 feet in the air displaying the same characteristics. The size of the
objects was undetermined and no smoke was seen. The objects reportedly
hovered in the air, but not as if suspended from parachutes. Two civilian
line crossers captured by 5th ROK Division south of Kosong on 5 June stated
that a food shortage in North Korea was their reason for leaving. (FECOM
