1 Weather:
Weather was marginal to non-operational on 31 July; however, the
remainder of the period was operational. (FEAF) (SECRET)
2. Enemy Situation:
Enemy activity increased slightly during the period. On 31 July,
eight of the UN divisions reported no enemy contact in their sectors. On
that day, an estimated 2, 500 enemy were observed constructing positions
along the enemy side of the Han estuary opposite Kimpo peninsula and Kang-
wha Island. During 1-3 August, enemy activity was characterized by minor
probing attacks up to platoon size, mostly in the west sector, and continued
scattered, though sometimes stubborn, opposition to UN patrol and raider
groups. Sporadic action continued on Hill No. 266, west of Chorwon, where
enemy up to company strength in bunkers opposed UN forces and launched
brief probing attacks against UN elements. One engagement in this area
lasted almost 10 hours on 31 July. Hostile mortar and artillery fire totalled
20, 474 rounds for the period, of which over 8, 700 rounds fell on 1 August.
More than half (over 12,000 rounds) of the total fell in the I US Corps sector.
over 5, 300 rounds on 1 August. Sightings of enemy vehicle traffic totalled
6,093, of which 1, 416 were southbound. Vehicle sightings for the first day
were negative owing to poor weather. (FECOM) (SECRET)
3. United Nations Situation
ARMY:
UN elements in the west sector launched several attacks up to
company size against enemy positions on Hill 266, forcing enemy elements
to withdraw and destroying four bunkers. The crest of Hill 266 was reoccu-
pied by UN troops on 31 July. Elsewhere across the front, UN elements re-
pulsed scattered probing attacks and continued aggressive patrol and raider
operations against scattered, generally light opposition. (FECOM) (SECRET)
