Weather: Weather for the period was operational with high and low scattered clouds over most of Korea with low visibility due to ground fog, smoke, and haze in the early morning of the last two days of the period. Temperatures in the battle area ranged from a minimum of 68 to a maximum of 93. (FEAF) (SECRET) 2. Enemy Situation: Enemy activity increased during the early part of the period. South- least of Kumsong, severe fighting continued over OP positions in the Capitol ROK Division sector, with enemy attacks up to two companies in size being launched on each of the first three nights of the period. Very heavy mortar and artillery fire continued in this sector, with over 13, 400 rounds being re- ceived during 9 August. Action ceased in this sector on 10 August, and only one light patrol.clash was reported in the area. In the west sector, enemy groups up to company strength launched several attacks against an OP posi- tion of the 1st Marine Division four miles least of Panmunjom. The position changed hands several times throughout 10-11 August, with the enemy in possession as the period closed. Heavy mortar and artillery fire was re- ceived in this sector during the last two days. Elsewhere across the front, enemy activity was characterized by minor probing attacks and scattered patrol clashes, with engagements generally brief but in one instance lasting three and one-half hours. On 8 August, three enemy tanks and three self- propelled guns were taken under UN artillery fire about three miles west of Hill 266 in the 2d United States Division sector. Hostile mortar and artillery fire for the period totalled 52, 621 rounds, of which 26, 808 fell in the II ROK Corps sector. The total for 9 August was 21, 688, a record high for a single day. Sightings of enemy vehicle traffic for the period totalled 3, 622, of which 1, 636 were southbound (FECOM) (SECRET) 3.
