Weather: Weather for the period 2 through 3 September began as operational and deteriorated to nonoperational for over 36 hours. Heavy rain fell along the battle front during the day of the 3d, severely restricting both ground and air action. (FEAF) (SECRET) 2. Enemy Situation; Eneray activity flared briefly on 2 September with a total of 10 probing attacks reported, the largest of which was 2-platoon strength against OP positions of the 3₫ ROK Division about 12 miles southeast of KUMSONG. During this attack the enemy employed 3, 180 rounds of mortar and artillery fire. The attack was re- pulsed after 65 minutes of fighting. Three small probing attacks were made in the 1st Marine Division sector northeast of PANMUNJOM and four small probing attacks were made against OP positions of the 25th US Division near the YANGGU-MARWHI road. All attacks were repulsed after brief engagements except in one instance in the 25th US Division sector, where a small enemy group was engaged for one hour. On 3 September, ground operations were restricted by poor weather and only three minor, very brief, probes were reported. On this day five of the UN Divisions re- ported no enemy contact in their sectors, and four others reported only one minor clash each. Highlight of this day's action occurred in the 25th US Division sector least of the YANGGU Road where 11 enemy attacked a U.N. OP position for one hour and fifteen minutes resulting in 10 enemy killed in action and the remaining 1 captured. Hostile mortar and artillery fire for the period totalled 9, 442 rounds, of which 8, 040 rounds fell on 2 September, over 3, 400 of it in the 3d ROK Division sector. The total enemy mortar and artillery fire for the week ending 3 September, inclusive, was 28, 881 rounds, of which 10, 694 fell in the I US Corps sector, and slightly over 8, 500 rounds in the II ROK Corps sector. Sightings of enemy vehicle traffic for the first day of the period totalled 837, of which 567 were southbound. Sightings for the second day were negative owing to poor weather. (FECOM) (SECRET) 3.
