1. Weather:
The weather for the period 4 through 7 September was generally good, being
operational during the entire period, with some scattered high and mid-level clouds
on the 7th, with only scattered rain falling in the combat area. (FEAF) (SECRET)
2. Enemy Situation:
Enemy activity increased during the period. Numerous probing attacks up
to battalion strength were made in the area northeast of PANMUNJOM, 1st Marine
Division sector, during the first three days. In the central sector, southeast of
KUMSONG, enemy activity increased markedly during the last two days of the
period, with attacks to company strength against UN OP positions. In one instance
in this sector, a platoon-size attack was supported by three enemy tanks. In the
east-central sector, OP and MLR positions of the 25th US Division were subjected
to numerous enemy attacks during the last two days of the period, the largest of
two-company strength lasting three hours. A total of 15 probing attacks up to
battalion strength were launched against 1st US Marine Division positions in the
general area of Hill 122 and to the west and northeast of the hill positions, with
heaviest action occurring during the night 6-7 September, when an attack of
battalion strength resulted in a 6 1/2 hour engagement, including heavy fighting
at close quarters. Attacks of company- and two-company strength occurred on 6
and 7 September. All attacks were repulsed, although in several instances the
enemy remained in the vicinity after engagements up to two hours' duration.
There was no enemy contact reported in this sector after 0400 hours, 7 September.
In the central sector, a total of 5 platoon- and company-strength attacks, supported
by heavy concentrations of mortar and artillery fire, were made against positions
of the Capitol ROK Division southeast of KUMSONG, during 6 and 7 September.
UN elements were forced to withdraw from several OP positions and UN counter
attacks were stubbornly resisted in all instances. In the east-central sector,
a
total of 11 probing attacks from squad to two-company strength were made against
positions of the 25th US Division during the afternoon 6 September and night 6-7
