Weather: Weather throughout the period was generally good and operational except on the 17th when there was a low scattered overcast with rain and marginal operating conditions. (FEAF) (SECRET) 2. Enemy Situation: Enemy activity diminished during the period, although heavy fight- ing occurred on all four days in the KUMHWA area, where enemy in up to two-battalion strength launched numerous attacks against UN elements on HILL 598, north of KUMHWA, and HILL 538, northeast of KUMBWA. As the period closed, action was continuing (morning 20 October). In the CHOR- WON area, heavy fighting occurred on the first two days of the period in a see-saw battle over HILL 391, northeast of CHORWON, with the enemy in up to two-company strength opposing UN efforts to secure hill positions. On the third day, there was no contact in this area, but heavy fighting resumed dur ing the night 19-20 October and is continuing. In the west, action flared again in the area northwest of YONCHON, where, during the last three days of the period, numerous enemy attacks of platoon-to two-company strength were made against UN OP positions in the vicinity of OTAN. UN elements were forced to withdraw from several positions after engagements of up to four and one-quarter hours' duration. In the east-central sector, an enemy platoon overran a UN MLR position of the 45th US Division in the early morning of 18 October; the position was restored by UN forces after a three-hour engagement. Else- where across the front, numerous probing attacks against OP and MLR posi- tions by enemy groups of up to four-platoon strength were repulsed. Enemy armored vehicles were observed in the west and central sectors on several days of the period, and one was destroyed by UN artillery fire on 17 October in the area northwest of YONCHON.
