Weather: Weather for the entire period was generally not good and was opera- tional for only a part of each day. On three of the four days there were low overcasts with snow showers over most of the peninsula. Battle area temperatures ranged from a low of 10° and a high of 34° F. (FEAF) (SECRET) 2. Enemy Situation: Enemy activity continued light during the period. Action was limited to sporadic, generally minor enemy probes and patrol clashes. Principal action of the four days occurred in the early morning of 21 December when an enemy company, supported by over 1, 000 rounds of mortar and artillery fire, attacked two OP positions near OLD BALDY, about 12 miles southwest of CHORWON in the I US Corps sector. The OP elements were forced to withdraw and the enemy followed to the MLR where action continued for about one and one-half hours; the enemy then withdrew. Sporadic enemy probes occurred in the SNIPER RIDGE/ROCKY POINT area on three of the four days of this period. In the east-central sector, on 19 December, five brief, small- scale probes occurred against positions northwest of KAJON. Hostile mortar and artillery fire for the period totalled about 15, 200 rounds, of which almost 6, 300 rounds fell in the I US Corps sector. Sightings of enemy vehicle traffic totalled 16, 989 for the four-day period, which includes the second highest day's total of the Korean War (7, 305 observed during the period 17-18 Decem- ber); during this period, 11, 404 vehicles were southbound.
