1. Weather:
The weather was clear and operational on only one day of the period -
the 2d of January. The first two days were marginal to non-operational
with broken overcast and snow. The last two days had scattered cloud
cover and snow showers, with fog and haze in the battle areas. Battle
line temperatures ranged from a maximum of 35° to a minimum of -80 F.

2. Enemy Situation:
Enemy activity was moderate during the first two days of the period, but
diminished during the last three days. In the west sector, enemy probes of
up to company strength forced UN elements to withdraw from an OP position
of the 1st ROK Division, northwest of YONCHON, on 2 January. The enemy
later withdrew and UN elements reoccupied the position without contact. In
the west-central sector, sporadic probes of up to company strength continued
against UN OP positions in the SNIPER RIDGE area, 9th ROK Division sector,
with from one to three attacks on each of the last four days of the period. All
attacks were repulsed after engagements of up to 2 1/2 hours. On 1 January,
a total of 10 probes, varying from squad to reinforced-platoon strength, were
made against positions of the 12th ROK Division in the KAJON area of the X
US Corps sector. All probes were repulsed after engagements of up to one
hour's duration. Elsewhere across the front, minor probes and scattered
patrol clashes were reported, involving enemy groups of platoon strength and
smaller in engagements generally under one hour's duration. Activity
diminished during the last three days, with at least seven of the UN divisions
reporting no enemy contact on each of those days. Hostile mortar and artillery
fire totalled approximately 29, 000 rounds, of which 9, 100 rounds fell in the
IX US Corps sector and about 6, 700 rounds fell in the I US Corps sector.
Sightings of enemy vehicle traffic totalled 10, 191, of which 5, 756 were south-
bound. During this five-day period, one day's sightings were negative owing
to non-operational weather. (FE.COM) (SECRET)
