1. Weather:
Weather ranged from marginal to operational, and was clear only on
the second day of the period. The first day had general cloud cover with
multi-layer clouds and intermittent snow showers. The last day had broken-
to-overcast low clouds with snow. Temperatures ranged from a maximum of
450 to a minimum of 0° F. (FEAF) (SECRET)
2. Enemy Situation:
Enemy activity continued moderate to light during the period. On the first
day, 12 January, principal action occurred in the west sector, where an enemy
company attacked two OP positions of the 7th US Division, southwest of CHOR-
WON. On the same day probes of platoon-to-company-strength occurred in the
SNIPER RIDGE area, northeast of KUMHWA, and on CAPITOL HILL, south-
east of KUMSONG. All attacks were repulsed after engagements of up to two
hours duration. On 13 and 14 January, the enemy continued probing action
in the SNIPER RIDGE area, with attacks to platoon strength which were re-
pulsed after brief engagements. In the central and east-central sectors, ac-
tion flared briefly in the morning of 13 and 14 January, respectively, with
attacks to platoon strength against OP positions of the 3d ROK and 7th ROK
Divisions. Elsewhere across the front, action was limited to generally minor
patrol clashes. On each of the last two days, seven UN divisions reported no
enemy contact. Hostile mortar and artillery fire for the three-day period
totalled about 17, 400 rounds, and for the week ending 14 January, inclusive,
totalled approximately 39,800 rounds, of which almost 12,600 rounds fell in
the IX US Corps sector and 10g 500 rounds in the I US Corps sector. Sightings
of enemy vehicle traffic for the three-day period totalled 12, 770g and included
a new record high daily total of 8, 313 vehicles sighted during the night 13-14
January. During the period, 9,519 vehicles were southbound, of which 6, 296
were reported during the night 13-14 January. (FECOM) (SECRET)
