ALFRED KOHLBERG INC. TELEPHONES 8477 Chinese Textiles WISCONSIN 7 8478 8479 I WEST 37TH STREET AK JUST OFF FIFTH AVE. NEW YORK 18, N. Y. October 18, 1951 ching Mr. R. C. Leffingwell Chairman of the Board Council on Foreign Relations 58 East 68th Street Copy New York 21, N Y. Dear Sir: When I read Chapter Two of your book "United States in World Affairs 1950 " by Mr. Richard P. Stebbins, and particularly pages 58 and 59, I was inclined to consider your book from a humorous point of view and wrote Mr. Mallory as per enclosed letter. Today's DAILY WORKER Prints an article by one of its editors presenting a similar viewpoint in a little more direct language Maybe Chapter Two was not humorous after all, and your assessment of Senator McCarthy and the mysterious China Lobby was intended to be serious, as is the article by John Pittman in the DAILY WORKER. I wonder if you seriously think that Senator McCarthy's charges are a "fraud and a hoax" and that the "China Lobby shrinks from no means of punishing those who had opposed all-out aid to Chiang Kai-shek?' Mr. Pittman and your book both credit my "lobby" and Senator McCarthy with preventing the diplomatic recognition of Commun- ist China. In short, you credit us with defeat of the "anti-China Lobby" in which you both seem to be enlisted. If your book was really intended to be serious, I must apol- logize to you and Mr. Mallory for the levity with which I first regarded it Very sincerely yours, TROMAN "NATIONAL ARCHIVES AND RECORDS SERVICE" aeford Kohlbey Alfred Kohlberg AK.am enc CC to Members of the Board
