APPROVED GREAT NARA TRUNARD EXECUTIVE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT & bureau OF THE budget WASHINGTON, 25, D.C. JUL ? 4 1946 JUL 24 1946 My dear Mr. Latta: The Congress has enacted H.R. 3533, "To authorize revisions in the boundary of the Hopewell Village National Historic Site, Pennsylvania, and for other purposes." Hopewell furnace, in Berks County, Pennsylvania, was one of the earliest charcoal furnaces and, like other furnaces of its kind, went out of business when its method of making iron became obsolete. In 1942 the Federal Government acquired this property consisting of 6,200 acres of woodland, in the center of which are the remains of the Hopewell furnace, the charcoal shed, the barn, the mansion, tenant houses, and other buildings. The present plan is to restore the furnace and its surroundings as nearly as possible to what they were when the plant was in full operation. The tract of land, however, is under the juris- diction of the Interior Department and since hunting thereon is not permitted, wild game has increased to the point where it is becoming a nuisance to the farmers of the community. The bill under consideration contemplates that there would be retained as the Hopewell Village a tract of land composed of some 800 to 1,000 acres for the purpose of recreation and of perpetuating history, and the remainder of the tract would be turned over to the Department of Forests and Waters of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as a recreational demonstration area. A facsimile of the enrolled enactment has been referred to the Department of the Interior, and its reply, interposing no objection to the approval of the bill, is attached. I am authorized by the Acting Director of the Bureau of the Budget to recommend that the bill be approved. Very truly yours, Mr. M. C. Latta, Assistant F.Barley Director, The White House. Legislative Reference. Enclosure: Letter from Interior Department. Copy each of House and Senate reports.
