Telecon Secretary Laird 3/13/70 9:15 a. m. K: I am sending over to you on an unofficial basis the President's decision on the Middle East deal. I'm sending you a copy of the directive he sent to the Secretary of State. I just wanted you to know so you wouldn't distribute it. L: There will be no distribution. K: I think you will agree with it. L: Very good. How did your meeting go with the Admiral? K: I liked him. I talked to the President about him and he said if you liked and I liked him we should procede. L: Okay, we've got a little time. K: When are you going to move on Moorer? L: Probably not until the end of the month, until these hearings are over. When Wheeler speaks we want him to be in a position where he's still talking with one voice. K: We'll leave the timing up to you. L: I don't want to rush it. About the Peers (?) Report, I think the Army JAG or should talk with you or Al Haig, so you've seen the stuff. K: You think we should do it? L: At least the game plan. K: Yes. L: How about Saturday or Monday? K: How about Tuesday? L: Well, I think he's releasing it on Tuesday. K: I'11 set something up. L: I'd like you and Al to take a half hour or SO Monday some time. I'll have Pursley get in touch with Al.
