K: There were practically no attacks in III and IV Corps for a week. These
They haven't managed to take over any provinces.
P: I see Mansfield in the paper on Laos. There isn't a damn thing in Laos.
K: He is talking about SVN Ranger units and they occasionally have American
advisers with them.
P: Here we are going in to defend Americans. One of these days I am going
to take him on. I have decided I have got to go earlier in my talk.
K: First week in June.
P: Yes. We had to make a basic strategy decision. Bryce wanted to make
a compromise. Were you there?
K: No, I saw Javits.
P: That didn't do any good, did it?
K: I scared the pants off him. I warned him, if you want Israel to be
destroyed you just get us out of Vietnam. You can't expect any President
to make a confrontation with Russia after we withdraw from Vietnam.
P: Did he get the point?
K: Yes.
P: I am going to speak to the country first, then the Senators can pass
anything they please.
K: I didn't feel confident enough about the Senate to have a strong judgment,
but my instinct now is for you to stand firm.
P: The tide is changing. The congressmen received a lot of mail, but it
was all a lot of form mail from the kids.
K: Chamberlain came in with some businessmen from central Michigan and
I gave them a strong speech and they were literally cheering. I gave some of
the figures and said, just remember, every one of these bullets could have
killed an American. Remember, we didn't invade Cambodia, we went after
North Vietnamese supplies in Cambodia.
