Telecon Frank Shakespeare 1/5/71 12:30 p. m. S: Before I left I wanted to get your counsel about anything to say or not to say. I am leaving tonight and staying in Athens. I'll be having dinner with Tasca and with his country team tomorrow night. Thursday morning I am calling on the Prime Minister. And that's all for Greece. Anything special I should say? K: You know our general pesition on that. What you should say to Tasca is that whatever we have said before is reaffirmed. S: Okay. I'11 be with teh Sixth Fleet for two days but that isn't of any consequence. I'm stopping at three places in Saudi Arabia: Jidda, Riad (?) and the headquarters of Aramco. In Jidda I'm seeing the Henry Kissinger, if you will, of Saudi Arabia. Then in Riad I'm meeting with King Faisal. I asked if this would just be a pro forma meeting and they said no, the King really liked to talk with people and get their ideas. Then I meet with Aramco K: I would be very interested to get the King's reaction on the Middle East leaving aside the Arab-Israeli issue. I can't tell you a lot about that except to say they will have to trade legitimacy for territory: they can't have both. The maximum amount of peace they can meet will help get back the '67 borders. S: My thought was to draw him out on his attitude about any thought regarding the Persian Gulf. K: And also how he visualizes the evolution in that area and the Soviet role in the Indian Ocean and the recovery of the radical states apart from the Arab-Israeli dispute. S: Okay. At Aramco there will be a briefing by the Aramco officials. K: I believe in the invincible stupidity of the American businessman. S: That's because you are a Harvard snob but I won't argue. K: No, I have never seen a group with such an idiotic concept of our foreign policy and of their own interests. When I read in the Communist press amazing. S: I happen to agree with you. Okay, then I go to two shiekdoms: Abudabi (?) and and I meet with the two rulers. I will be interested in their thoughts on the federation.
