K: And in many ways alliances are getting outmoded anyway.
Countries fight for their interests, and not just for alliances.
P: Especially with nuclear weapons around.
K: I think it was a tremendous plus.
P: At least for the next two or three months you're not going to
hear people crying about why don't you have a press conference.
K: And I'm practically certain that now they'll stop talking about
divisions, because you were extremely conciliatory. Your whole posture
was that of a man trying to lead the whole country. And you give a good
explanation of your role in the campaign. I am not surprised that your
rating went up in our own poll after the last one and I would be amazed
if this didn't do the same thing.
P: You never can tell about that.
K: But you have the initiative now. Now you have the State of the Union
on the
and the foreign policy report I think will be better this
year than last.
P: But we have to get more coverage on it.
K: As a historical document this is going to be a good record. But
we have to get a publicity job on it.
P: I might televise it say here is the report and then give a 10-minute
summary. Go on at 7:00 and say I want just 10 minutes. Give a summary
at the beginning, basically read it, and then say it's available to anyone; we
will send it to you for 10 cents.
K: Excellent idea and you/could give the main theme of it.
P: Of we could give it to them free.
K: Butu sually people read more if they pay a little. But I guess
writing for it is a commitment in itself.
P: Or I wouldn't have to say that it was available; the announcer would
say that.
K: That will be ready by February 15, SO that is going to be a strong
month, and then thise other things planned for April. And by that time
I am seeing Dobrynin soon. We can get a good feeling for what's obtainable.
