Telecon Dean Rusk 1/7/71 11:55 a. m. R: I have a small suggestion. I understand you and Bill Rogers are talking to the Americans for Winning the Peace group on the 11th. Let me pass on a thought. I have heard echos from certain of these conferences complaining about relative lack of candor and fresh information, different from what's in the press. Some of the Georgians who will be at the meeting are bright people and I would like to encourage the people at the meeting to be as candid as pos- sible. It's a small point, but I think it important. K: It's a good suggestion -- frankly I haven't focused on what I'm going to say. I never speak where the press is present so that in it- self will free me to be frank. I think when ad Administration official speaks it should be as non-banal as possible. But you think the Georgians coming are good? R: Yes, first class. I'll be meeting with some of them a few days later. I don't know if you have in mind who they are. They are people like Livingston Merchant, Mary Lord, Al Gruenther. It's a friendly group. K: I knew that. What I wasn't sure about wes whether it was a slightly right-wing group. R: It's not right-wing, but if I had any criticism I'd say the average age of the members is too old; they don't have very many young people. But you can't do anything about that. K: Do you ever come to Washington? R: I was there just before Christmas and may come next month. K: I'd consider it S privielege to have lunch with you. R: I'll call when I am there. K: Will you without a ppecific invitation ? R: Yes. K: Good.
