DR:
Does it look better than it was.
HK:
I just don't want to, you know--two weeks ago everyone was writing
no progress; now everyone is writing as if it is already done.
DR:
No, what we've said is that the fact you met two days with th is man
-you had an unscheduled second day with him--that it clearly
indicates how serious this talks have become and that suggests a
quick indication of talks- and that you might be going back somewhat
sonner than the ordinary interim, and that this would indicate progress.
HK:
That's fair enough.
DR:
There's no reason to change that reading?
HK:
No, but how quickly that all will lead anywhere if indeed it will lead
anywhere we can't tell.
DE:
Do you think you'll know as a result of your next meeting.
HK
I can't tell.
DR:
Is the problem with these meetings the same sort of probelms that
occurred in the Johnson Administration waiting for these people to
consult with hanoi and waiting for traffic to turn around and come back.
HK:
I just don't want to make any comment on substance, Dave, I just feel
we've done this thing this far and I don't want to screw it up now by
saying anything.
DE:
All right, what else can you do for me, anything?
HK:
I'll talk to you if it should get done or if it should clearly fail then
we can get a troop together of knowledable people and talk to them.
DE:
Is a luncheon possible with you.
HK:
Let me call you Monday about that.
DR:
I would appreciate it. You call me Monday.
HK:
Or you call me one way or the other.
DK:
However you wish it?
HK
You call me.
