K:
Hello.
B:
Your modesty last Friday overwhelmed all of us. How could
you do that to me.
K:
I thought I was pretty clear.
B:
You said you were going to give a 10 or 20 minute speech and
that it would be philosophical. You're just too shy, that's your problem.
K:
Well, you should know me well enough that if I give you an
advance tip it must be fairly serious.
B:
Henry, I've never had the opportunity to know you well enough.
Two questions, you always give me two questions.
K:
Well may I make a point about the Washingto N Post. It is sort
of discouraging to have it reported as if the major theme had been
Watergate and the secondary theme Vietnam.
B:
Well I wonder, you know, was Scotty suddenly listening very
carefully, or--
K:
I give you my word of honor that I have not talked to Scotty in
four weeks.
B:
No kidding.
K:
I give you my word of honor.
B:
Well let me ask you then, we are trying to recoup and do another
piece on it and I wanted to check. Can you give me some background
on why you chose this particular time to do it. I know you've had
invitations any day of the week that you want to pick them up to give a
speech. Why now?
K:
Because the President is meeting Brandt next week, he's meeting
Pompidou later, because he's been talking about the Year of Europe and
because we've heard so many reports- I've been talking to McCloy,
George Ball, to all the participants I could reach at the Amsterdam con-
ference.
B:
Yeah, I wondered if that had something to do with it.
