I had talked to the Soviet Ambassador about going to the Soviet Union in April. K: Yes, they told me about it. TK: And I just thought I'd mention it to you -- they extended an invi- tation to me and I decided. K: I think it's a good idea. TK: Fine. I just wanted to let you know I'd given it some thought and they extended an official invitation a week ago and I just sort of really decided yesterday. I had a fellow down talking to me, but I wanted to let you know. K: Between you and, me, they asked me whether it would create any bad feelings here and I told them absolutely not. TK: Right. Fine. Well, that's fine. One other thing, Henry, I have been appointed on the American delegation to attend this conference in Geneva. It's sponsored by the Swiss government and the ICRC International Committee of the Red Cross to update the Geneva Conventions, and this has been in the area that I have been interested in, the whole impact of warfare. K: That Conference is going on now, isn't it? TK: That's going on now. Now I was supposed to go over Mansfield appointed me as the Senate delegate and I was going over a week ago last Thursday and make the speech over there on Friday. And then my mother had gotten sick and, as a matter of fact they had some various procedural problems, in any event, and - about the seating of various delegations, and then they ran into similar
