Monday, October 19, 2009 Page 2 of 2 August 11, 1971 PERSONAL Dear Tony: This is just a note to thank you for your most thoughtful letter of July 22 and to tell you how much I enjoyed reading your reminiscences of the times we have met. As you probably know, I had hoped to come to the Encampment this year but when it proved impossible to do so and maintain the tradition and spirit of the Grove I cancelled my plans. In connection with the generous offer you made concerning The Wine Vault, I have asked Herbert Kalmbach to be in touch with you to work out arrangements. With my appreciation and best personal regards, Sincerely, Mr. Antonio Cortese Wine Vault Incorporated 909 Park Avenue San Jose, California 95150 BCC: Herbert Kalmbach BOHEMIAN CLUB WEAVING SPIDERS COME NOT HERE July 22, 1971 Clemente? SAN FRANCISCO Mr. Richard M. Nixon, President Son United States of America The White House Washington, D.C. Dear Mr. President: First of all, I would like to reintroduce myself because we have met before. With the grave problems of the world on your shoulders, LF you could not possibly be asked to remember an incident in the Bohemian Grove following your unfortunate defeat by Pat Brown for Governor of California. The setting was the Main Dining Room, the time was long past the dinner hour, and you were eating alone near the entrance to the Dining Room on the right side. My camp mates and I had just finished our dinner. As we were leaving the dining room we noticed that you were alone. As you know in the true Bohemian spirit, we never allow a fellow Bohemian to either eat or drink alone. So we shared with you our bottle of wine which, incidentally, was a California wine. We then regaled you with song with strong emphasis on "Bohemia's Home Is Here". We did manage to cheer you up a little, we then left you to finish your dinner and our bottle of wine. I might add that we met another time when we were introduced by George Murphy at Lost Angels Camp. All of this long introduction is merely to assure you that what I am about to propose will be done in the spirit of Bohemia and not with the intent of a "weaving spider". I recently read an article by Mr. Philip Hiering in the Log of the Military Wine Taster. The article is entitled "The White House Has No Wine Cellar". I found it very difficult to accept that statement, hence this letter. May I take just one moment of your very busy schedule to tell you about a new product by the Viking Sauna Company, with whom you are well acquainted. It is BOHEMIAN CLUB SPIDERS COME NOT WEAVING HERE July 22, 1971 Page 2 0° OF SAN FRANCISCO called The Wine Vault. The Wine Vault, Inc. is a sub- sidiary of Viking Sauna. We are producing pre-fab- ricated and self-contained wine cellars with temper- ature control for private and commercial use. The President of our company, Mr. Robert Jones, and chair- man of the Board, Bohemian, Mr. James Bancroft, and I would like to present to you your choice of any one of our five Wine Vaults. You may choose any one of the five models with complete confidence that this infor- mation will never be used, advertised or publicized. I have enclosed a brochure which describes The Wine Vault and graphically illustrates its five models, capacities and configurations. As a fellow Bohemian, may I suggest that you accept this offer in the spirit in which it is offered. Bohemians and Presidents, both like a good wine with a good meal. You have the privilege and the right to be an "Eclectic Wine Bibber" with convenience and selection whenever you want it from your own private wine cellar. Sincerely, in the Spirit of Bohemia, Antonio Cortese WINE VAULT INC. 909 Park Avenue San Jose, CA 294-4271 P.S. A sad note You no doubt read that our fine Bohemian and dear friend, Bill Thompson, passed on and now dwells in the forest of the grove The Happy Hunting Ground of Bohemians and Leprechauns. About fifty of us flew down as Guests of Fred Hartley's Executive Jet and Hernando Cartwright's Beverly Wilshire and gave him a good old fashioned "wake" with bag pipes and all Led by Ray Bolger and Dennis Day To quote Bill Gargan "This is the damndest "Friday night" I have ever seen". DETERMINED TO All ADMINISTRATIVE MARKING CONFIDENTIAL E.O. 12065, Section 6-102 By MH . WAS. Date 3/17/81 MEMORANDUM FOR REX SCOUTEN FROM Rose Mary Woods July 28, 1971 Would you be good enough to read the attached letter from Antonio Cortese - look at the brochure and give - me your advice as to whether we should show it to the President. In other words, is it something that is needed in the White House? If not, does it look suitable for his San Clemente place or Florida? THANKS. (Confidentially, the President will probably see this man -- maybe not personally - when he goes to the Grove on Saturday of this week. Therefore, I would like to have an early answer SO I can at least show this to him before he leaves on Friday evening.) MR. PRESIDENT: Rex Scouten and I thought you might like to accept this for San Clemente. YES oR NO Rose Mary Woods 209 PROVIDENCE ROAD ANNAPOLIS, MARYLAND 21401 Washington, Penna. July 28, 1971 Dear Rose Mary: I had at home a long negative letter from Dr. Richard Arena about all the difficulties of using his materials. I know permissions must be granted, by those who give the interviews, but I also know that in most cases the interviewees are guided by the holder of their oral history in giving permissions. So Dr. Arena can be very helpful if he wishes. I don't know fromthis distance how helpful he intends to be, but I do know that a letter from you to him ought to snap him up no end. On to Columbus tomorrow, and then down south to Nixon country, Ohio. Then to Indiana and Illinois and further west. I shall be in LA next month. Don't know quite when. Best regards, Ed Edwin P. Hoyt fill Washington, Penna. July 28, 1971 Dear Dr. Arena: Telephoning home, I have news of your letter regarding my request for help on the book authorized about the Nixons by the President. I am aware of the restrictions on oral histories such ns those at Columbia, and of course we cannot jeopardize the program. But I know it is sometimes possible to have some people release their histories (with the specific permissmion). I do hope to have your help in this, and in finding and using the papers saved by the President's mother. Asyou can see, I am tracing the family history on this trip, and have made some interesting findings to date. I go to Columbus tomorrow, then down south to Ohio locations of Nixons, and then slowly work my way west. I hope to see you next month. Sincerely, Edwin P. Hoyt The Western White House San Clemente July 13, 1971 Dear Ed: Since writing you on June 17 I have heard from several people whom I wrote about your book, and I am sure you will be in touch with them sometime during the summer. For your information, Athalie Clarke would like you to contact her any time after the middle of this month. She will be at her home in Corona Del Mar for the remainder of the summer. Waller Taylor is looking forward to seeing you, as is John Reilly. McIntyre Faries will be away from Los Angeles until August 8 when he can be reached at Apartment 5-C, 400 Burnside Avenue, Los Angeles, telephone 213/931/6808. BACKGROUND: All of those named above strongly urge that you make this call today. Jerry would like to make the announcement that John Rollins will do this at the Finance Committee meeting in Denver on Thursday. July 21, 1971 (last day) call Towai, made werr 21 RECOMMENDED TELEPHONE CALL TO: John W. Rollins, Sr. RECOMMENDED BY: Harry S. Dent and Tom Evans (Colson concurs) PURPOSE: To acknowledge John Rollins' participation in the November 9 RNC Fund Raising Dinner project. BACKGROUND: Tom Evans of the RNC has requested that you telephone John Rollins while he is staying at the La Costa Country Club here in California this week. Attempts are being made to get Rollins to serve as Chairman of the Fund Raising Dinner project but to date he has been reluctant to do so. The purpose of your call would be one of subtle persuasion in which you would acknowledge No and express your pleasure in hearing that John Rollins "is playing a major role in the November 9 dinner project". Tom Evans emphasizes that not now the call should not be one that openly attempts to persuade Rollins to take the job as Chairman. TALKING POINTS: 1. Express pleasure that Rollins will be playing the major role in the November 9 fund raiser which will be nationwide, linked with closed circuit television. 2. Note that you had hoped to visit with him personally while you were here in San Clemente, but that your staff had scheduled you rather tightly. 3. Rollins has set up polling operation in Delaware. It's a good idea. Keep us advised through Harry Dent. July 15, 1971 (No letter has been sent.)
