This was primarily the result of a large and\nwell-organized Victory Squad that operated on election day.\nDick Nixon will be our next governor if we can duplicate that effort\nin 1962. Los Angeles County needs 10,000 volunteers to work in the\nprecincts between 3:00 and 7:00 P.M. on November 6th. Because the\nstock exchanges will be closed that day, our industry has an excellent\nopportunity of contributing materially to a Republican victory. Many\nfeel that the future of the Republican party rests on the results of\nthe California Gubernatorial race.\nWould you please ask your representatives and employees to help bring\nthis campaign to a successful climax by donating part of their after-\nnoon on election day to work on the Victory Squad. Please have them\nfill out and mail the enclosed cards today. These cards will be pro-\ncessed and precincts assigned by an IBM machine that must have this\ninformation by this Friday, October 26th.\nIf each firm could send in ten to fifteen names we would be doing our\npart to assure a victory. The outcome of this election will\ndepend upon how many workers the respective candidates can produce\nfor election day and for the absentee ballot drive. As I am sure\nyou know, the law on absentee ballots has been changed. They\nmust be in the hands of the election officials three days before\nelection day. This was put through the legislature by Unruh and\nBrown to cut down on the absentee voting which gave Nixon Cali-\nfornia in '60. It will probably do it too.\nIn an off-year election it is extremely difficult to generate a\ngreat deal of enthusiasm in voters. Therefore, they usually don't\nturn out to the polls in too great numbers unless someone works\nthe area. This is where you come in. In this election the workers\nwill win it for Nixon -- if we can get them out.\nCould you help us line up some workers for the four hours (3 - 7 p.m.)\non election day which will make the difference between victory and\ndefeat?\nIt's up to you in '62!\nSincerely,\nHarold Phillips\n1"
