MEMORANDUM FOR:
DICK HOWARD
FROM:
CHARLES COLSON
We need to get some more activity stirred up on the question
of the Newspaper Build endorsing McGovern. McGovern is
very vulnerable on this, as is the Guild. Talk to Safire and
Moore and get their ideas. Obviously we can get Jeffrey
Hart to write a few speeches for us; he would be very good
on this one. We mustn't let people forget that the most
important union in the United States has endorsed McGovern;
obviously it is the most influential union because it controls
what is printed and said. As a matter of fact, on this score
give me a typical D & A which can be sent to our major
spokesmen. When anyone is asked "what about union support
for the President the answer can be the President has
earned the support of the rank and file and the polls shows
that they will support him but the most critical and most
important union, the Newspaper Guild, has afterall endorsed
McGovern. This is essential and anything we can do with
Clawson to drum up more editorial comments would be very
helpful. Also, as a thought, letters to the editor to those
papers that have not condemned the Guild for this act would
be very useful letters which challenge the editors to
repudiate the Guild endorsement or in they don't, charge
that they can't because the Guild member editorial writers
would refuse to write editorials. This could be very useful.

MEDORANDUM FOR:
DICK HOWARD
FROM:
CHARLES COLSON
Why? Please tell me why -- (by the way, at this point I am
frothing at the mouth), the full Fitzsimmons statement was
not printed in Monday? If you will recall, I discussed this
with you and you told me Lofton was going to use the state-
ment intact and the picture on the dover. The picture on
the cover is delightful, except that it happens to be one that
was taken when the President had the Canadian flag on his
lapel as well as the American flag, which will incense the
Teamster executives, since it was put on the President
Monday by their Vice President from Canada who is a jackass.
And, there is no Fitzsimmons statement anywhere in the copy.
The Fitzsimmons statement is a perfect thing for our Party
people to use I am absolutely running out of patience on
this. We keep being told things are going to be in Monday and
then they are not. What inGod's name does it take to get this
straighted out? Would you please ask for an explanation and I
think from now on we had simply better see the page mock-ups
of Monday before it goes to print.

Be sure to follow up on the Buchwall-style column on the
New York Times endorsement. I just talked to Buchanana
and he's going to check to see if Jeff Hart is going to write
it. If not, he will write it and you will give it to Lasky
to print it, but check Buchanan today because we've got
to move out on this if Hart doesn't come through for us.

MEMORANDUM FOR:
DICK HOWARD
FROM:
CHARLES COLSON
I want a report on what we have done in connection with
Billy Graham's Explo. I am appalled that we only had an
"observor" present. Based on what Billy Graham told the
President, these were our people. They want to go out
and campaign for us and we should exploit this as fully as
possible. This can be an enormous campaign resource.
I think last week or the week before 1 made a notation in
the News Summary to Howard Cohen telling him to be sure
that our people were involved with this. I can't believe with
Rietz' operation going the way it is, that we didn't get very
deeply involved with this. It probably is not too late to do
so; we should have had our operatives there circulating
through the crowd.
I want to be absolutely certain that this is followed through on.
Assign it to Cohen and be sure that I get follow through reports.
